The Purple Goose
About This Spot
Stepping into The Purple Goose feels like slipping into a familiar corner of small-town charm where time slows just enough to savor simple pleasures. Nestled on Janesville’s main street, this unpretentious bar and restaurant offers a welcoming embrace, blending the feel of an old-style neighborhood gathering spot with the subtle buzz of a lively community hub. The hum of quiet conversations, the clink of glasses, and the warm, easy camaraderie among patrons create a relaxed rhythm that invites visitors to linger.
The atmosphere is friendly and unhurried, reflecting years of tradition without ever feeling stuck in the past. Whether you're settling in for an evening with friends or dropping by for a midday break, the pace is comforting, and the service attentive without being intrusive. Here, the staff’s genuine warmth makes the space feel like a shared living room — where everyone knows your name, yet newcomers are welcomed as good company.
Food and drink at The Purple Goose come with a down-to-earth, honest vibe. The menu resists pretense in favor of hearty, thoughtfully prepared favorites that echo the kind of home-cooked meals that linger in memory. Whether it’s the satisfying crunch of broasted chicken, the comforting simplicity of meatloaf, or the indulgent warmth of crispy fries paired with a creamy, smoky chipotle ranch, each bite feels like a quiet celebration of tradition and local flavor. And drinks like a carefully balanced Bloody Mary or a cold beer amplify the feeling that you’ve found a spot made for savoring moments as much as meals.
More than just a place to eat and drink, The Purple Goose thrives as a center for connection — where the unexpected joy of winning a late-night raffle or sharing a hearty laugh with the bartender becomes part of the experience. It’s this blend of familiar tastes, genuine service, and authentic human moments that makes every visit feel comfortably personal, inviting guests to return again and again.

Fantastic small town dive bar with wonderful service and staff. The beers is cold, the onion rings and fries are out of this world, and the chipotle ranch is the perfect blend of creamy and spicy. You won’t go wrong with a burger here, however the chicken wrap was pretty dry. The best part is that it’s all affordable.

Wonderful old style bar and grill with small town Cafe. This is our 4th time here for some dinner. Couldn't wait fer their pizza, oops, they had a broasted chicken buffet, only $14. Had ta try it. Chicken was like Grandma makes, crunchy skin, not much seasoning, but sprinkle of salt and this was REALLY good stuff. Mashed tatoes-n-gravy were the same way, not crazy on overseasoning, but small sprinkle of salt and pepper, wow. FULL salad bar with small amounts of a lot of varieties which kept it pretty fresh. Gonna stop here again. Brother and I stopped again... this time for the goose special pizza. Uffda that's good!!! Quite filling k will say. Lotsa toppings plenty of cheese a good crust and really good sauce. Thank you Goose!

We made the trip from Austin, MN to Janesville specifically to visit The Purple Goose Smokehouse & Saloon! As our luck goes, we arrived right as breakfast was ending BUT the new owners were extremely friendly & let us order breakfast anyway!! The food alone was worth the trip! We ordered the ham & cheese omelet, french toast platter, pancake platter, and kids fries. Everything was delicious, and the waitress was excellent. Our first trip there, but it definitely won't be the last. Can't wait to return! Shelly & Doug are going to do just fine running this place

I was told about this place from a friend. I was not disappointed. As you drive down main street into Janesville, MN.. off to the side is this purple building, The Purple Goose, which I love that name. The atmosphere was warm, fun, and inviting. Our waitress and bartender Sara (I'm not sure about the spelling) and she was fantastic and very helpful. It was all of ours first time there and she took the time to explain how everything worked, which was important because it was all you can eat broasted chicken . Me and my parents got the chicken and salad bar and soup (tomato basil). My brother got the hamburger steak and his wife got the fried shrimp. I loved the tomato basil soup as I got 3 helpins of it. My first trip up was a heaping salad . They have so many fresh and delicious options at the salad bar... even wonderful fresh fruit. After eating my salad and soup, I got the broasted chicken (because it's fried under pressure) and it is crispy, moist, and tender. The gravy, corn and mashed potatoes compliment it perfectly. My only problem was that I went up a 3rd time to the buffet, and I got too stuffed . We all talked about how we can't wait to come back and try the pizzas, as several people came in to get take-out orders. That's another thing... Is everyone there was really nice. They were just having a good time and people raised their beers and smiled as we were enjoying great food, atmosphere and company. Whether you're a regular or a first-timer .. The Purple Goose is a blast. I highly recommend going to Janesville and spending some time there!
